Online scams are becoming more organised, with teams assigned specific roles and operations stretching across borders. An Enforcement Directorate probe into alleged call-centre fraud found that one syndicate used AI-generated voices, while regulators warn that AI can make impersonation scams more convincing.
The caller may be only the first link in the chain. Investigators describe “openers” who build trust, “bankers” who assess a victim’s finances, “closers” who apply pressure and “processors” who move the money. Gift cards, cash, gold, cryptocurrency and informal transfer networks can all feature in the alleged money trail.
The investigations show why shutting one office may not be enough: callers, data, money handlers and assets can be spread across cities and countries. US figures cited in the report highlight the scale of losses among older Americans, though they cover internet crime broadly, not Indian call-centre scams alone.
