Ohio’s governor’s race has erupted into controversy after Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy launched a $4 million statewide advertising campaign featuring the estranged biological mother of his Democratic rival, Amy Acton. The controversial ad has triggered a fierce response from Acton, who calls it a “hideous” and “exploitative” attempt to use her painful childhood for political gain.
Speaking during recent campaign stops, Acton addressed the advertisement as the “big elephant in the room,” recalling the severe abuse, hunger and neglect she says she and her brother endured as children. She also remembered the people in her community who stepped in rather than looking the other way during her childhood trauma.
