Homelessness supports top Ottawa downtown safety poll

An exclusive Nanos Research poll for CTV News Ottawa reveals that providing supports for unhoused residents is the top priority for voters seeking to improve the downtown core. CTV's Stefan Keyes reports that 48 per cent of surveyed residents rank homelessness support as their number-one issue, outpacing public safety at 30 per cent, increased foot traffic at 10 per cent and transit upgrades at one per cent. Ottawa Mission leadership noted that public attitudes are shifting toward compassionate mental health and addiction care, replacing past calls to simply clear areas like the ByWard Market. While regular transit commuters like Ann McKenna report feeling unsafe due to open drug use and daytime violence along Bank Street, safety concerns remain widespread across downtown, suburban and rural wards.
