Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth came under intense questioning from Democratic Rep. Adam Smith over the Trump administration’s justification for the Iran war, after Hegseth declared that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “obliterated.”

Smith immediately challenged the logic of that claim, reminding Hegseth that the administration had previously argued the United States had to go to war because an Iranian nuclear weapon posed an “imminent threat.” Smith pressed: if the facilities were already obliterated, why was the threat still being used to justify continued war?
