‘MERZ RUINING GERMANY’: AfD’s Alice Weidel CHEERS Trump-Putin Diesel Deal | ‘That’s Realpolitik!’

Donald Trump’s move to allow Russian diesel back into international markets has triggered a political attack on Germany’s energy and sanctions policy from AfD co-chair Alice Weidel. Weidel praised Trump’s approach as “realpolitik” and targeted Chancellor Friedrich Merz, writing on X: “While Merz ruins Germany with sanctions and expensive LNG, Trump practices realpolitik.” Her argument centres on the contrast between Washington adjusting restrictions when American fuel costs are under pressure and Germany continuing its shift away from Russian energy. Trump says Russia will initially supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to American and global markets, with further shipments expected. Washington has also issued a temporary licence easing restrictions on Russian diesel shipments. Germany sharply reduced its dependence on Russian pipeline energy after the Ukraine war began and expanded alternative supplies, including LNG. Merz and other European leaders defend sanctions as necessary pressure on Moscow, while Weidel argues Germany should prioritise its own economic interests.
