Germany, France Push Tougher EU China Trade Policy As Europe’s Deficit Tops €1 Billion A Day
Germany and France are pushing for stronger European Union powers to respond quickly to trade threats and alleged market distortions, amid growing concern over Europe’s dependence on China. Their proposal could allow the EU to restrict market access for companies from countries accused of distorting competition.
The push comes as EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič holds talks in Beijing with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. A key concern is Europe’s trade deficit with China, which the DW report says exceeds €1 billion a day, alongside Chinese restrictions on rare earths and other critical materials.
