EU Budget Battle: Germany Pushes Cuts As Von Der Leyen Defends €2 Trillion Plan

A major battle is brewing over the European Union’s next seven-year budget. Germany and five other “frugal” countries want hundreds of billions of euros in cuts, while 17 mainly southern and eastern European states are pushing for more spending on farmers and regional development. At the centre of the dispute is a proposed €2 trillion budget — around 60% larger than the current one — as Europe faces pressure to spend more on defence, competitiveness and Ukraine.
