This week on WION Wings, we begin with the street food flavours of Varanasi before travelling across Ladakh, China, Germany and Bali for some of the world’s most colourful cultural celebrations.
Varanasi is famous for its ghats, temples and spiritual traditions, but its food culture is just as distinctive. We head into the city’s lanes to sample some of its best-known street-food experiences. From spicy chaat and cooling kulfi to the colourful drinks at Blue Lassi and the local atmosphere around Lakshman Chaiwala, we discover how food offers another way to understand one of India’s oldest living cities.
Ladakh celebrates its culture with three days of music, sport and tradition. The festival features performances by the all-female music group Stringmo, introduces the Ladakh Women’s Polo Team, and puts women’s sport in the spotlight with an exhibition polo match We explore how the festival brings together Ladakh’s music, heritage and sporting identity.
China lights up for the Mid-Autumn Festival. In Hong Kong, the famous Fire Dragon Dance returns, while lantern displays add another spectacular element to the celebrations. Elsewhere across China, concerts, traditional performances and community events attract large crowds, while even giant pandas join the festivities with special mooncake-inspired treats.
Next, we head to Munich for the world’s largest beer festival. Oktoberfest brings together traditional Bavarian clothing, music, food, fairground attractions and enormous festival tents as visitors arrive from around the world for one of Germany’s most famous annual celebrations.
In Bali, villagers take part in a dramatic ritual known as the War of Fire. Participants face one another with burning materials in a spectacular tradition that brings together ritual, community and centuries-old local culture.
