Saudi Arabia's response to the attempted hijacking incident involving a flydubai flight carrying Israeli passengers has exposed the limits of its behind-the-scenes relationship with Israel. Despite helping receive and assist the Israeli passengers after the aircraft diverted to Saudi Arabia, Riyadh reportedly stopped short of full cooperation with Israeli authorities.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Israel's efforts to arrange an Israeli rescue flight failed to materialize, while the Mossad reportedly had to verify the identities of the replacement flight crew to reassure shaken passengers. Israeli officials also struggled to obtain direct information from Saudi Arabia about the initial investigation, relying instead on the UAE, the United States and passenger accounts.
