Atlanta welcomed its newest celebrities on Sunday, September 27, as two giant pandas from China arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport aboard a jumbo jet dubbed the “FedEx Panda Express.” Two years after Atlanta returned its previous pandas to China, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang have arrived to begin a new stay at Zoo Atlanta—one of only three U.S. zoos currently housing the animals. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced during his state visit on Thursday, September 24, that the pandas would soon travel to the United States. He described them as “an envoy of friendship” between China and the U.S.
