AI Coding Tools Hit By Major Plugin4Shell Security Flaw | WION Podcast

A vulnerability called Plugin4Shell has affected Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI, exposing weaknesses in how AI coding tools verify plugin updates. Researchers say the flaw could allow attacker controlled code to run through malicious plugin updates without additional user action. Anthropic and OpenAI have released fixes for Claude Code and Codex, while the researchers report that GitHub Copilot remains without a full patch and Google does not plan to patch the deprecated Gemini CLI. Because these assistants can access source code, credentials and command execution environments, the vulnerability highlights growing supply chain risks around AI development tools. The discovery is increasing pressure on plugin marketplaces and AI companies to strengthen verification systems.
