‘Russia Won’t Even Need Tanks’: Europe Warns Of Putin’s New Battlefield; ‘We Ain’t Prepared’
Europe could spend hundreds of billions on weapons and still face a dangerous vulnerability: the next major conflict may not begin with tanks crossing a border. Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset has warned that Europe is “not really well-prepared” for the kind of hybrid warfare that could accompany a confrontation involving Russia. The threat goes beyond drones and missiles. Cyberattacks, attacks on critical infrastructure, disruption of energy systems and disinformation campaigns could all become part of a modern conflict. Berset says Europe cannot prepare simply by buying more conventional weapons. Governments also need to protect the infrastructure and information systems that ordinary people rely on every day. The warning comes as European defence spending rises sharply and the EU pursues its Readiness 2030 plan. At the same time, questions remain over Europe’s long-standing dependence on the United States for security.
