Germany’s students are taking over the streets as hundreds of protesters flood Hamburg to oppose the country’s new military-service system and warn that it could eventually pave the way for a return of conscription.
The demonstrations took place as the Bundeswehr conducted its major “Red Storm Charlie” civil-military exercise across Hamburg, creating a striking contrast between military preparations and growing opposition among young people. Protesters carried banners reading “Russia is not our enemy,” “Win the peace, not the war,” and “You won’t fight your war on our backs.”
