Step inside a mid-century home in Wimbledon, southwest London — where EMR Architecture turned two separate flats into one family house, with a rear extension, a loft addition and a garden studio 🏡✨
Emilie from EMR Architecture returns to a project for a family of four who bought a house that had been split into two dated flats. The brief was to strip everything back and rework the layout so it actually worked for how they live, rather than staying stuck as two old flats knocked together.
At the front, the entrance was reinstated with Victorian details — stained glass made by a local glassmaker, including a pair of reclaimed panels with birds worked into the design, and encaustic tiles that look original but are brand new. Wimbledon's planners required sustainable drainage throughout, so the front and back gardens use pebbles and stone rather than a concrete slab.
Inside, a large internal window connects the living room through to the back of the house, and a sunken snug drops the floor level to free up space visually. The kitchen extension pairs an oak veneer island with a bioethanol fireplace, a walk-in pantry, and a boiling tap with a full-drop design for easier cleaning. A curved wall — built around a hidden steel beam — softens what would otherwise be a sharp corner and echoes the curve of the staircase.
Upstairs, two bedrooms share a bathroom with cafe curtains for privacy, and the principal suite includes a mid-century headboard, a walk-in wardrobe and a marble ensuite. The loft, added as a new floor, holds two more bedrooms and a shared bathroom with a bespoke shower screen.
The project took around 12 months to build and was delivered on time and on budget, with the garden studio now used as a home gym.
