Donald Trump says the United States is working on a major deal to buy potash from Belarus, opening a new trade channel with one of Vladimir Putin’s closest allies even as Washington’s economic fight with Canada deepens.

Trump said the prospective Belarus agreement would allow the U.S. to buy fertilizer at a price “substantially less” than what it currently pays Canada. Canada remains the dominant supplier of potash to the United States, making the announcement particularly significant amid the broader tariff and trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.
