In this video, we explain the discovery of a new wild cat species, Leopardus tilcayo, in Bolivia after more than 100 years, its 1.4 million-year-old evolutionary history, unique features, genetic significance, and conservation concerns. This discovery highlights the importance of biodiversity research and wildlife conservation.
Scientists have identified Leopardus tilcayo as a new species of tiger cat from Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forests. The species diverged from other tiger cats around 1.4 million years ago and represents the first newly described living cat species in over a century. Researchers analysed DNA samples from tiger cats across South America, revealing greater genetic diversity among these small wild cats.
The discovery is important for UPSC Prelims 2027 and UPSC Current Affairs, especially under Environment & Ecology, Biodiversity, Species Discovery, Conservation, Evolution, International Reports, and Wildlife Protection.
The video covers Leopardus tilcayo, tiger cats, Bolivia’s Yungas forests, genetic studies, IUCN assessment, and threats like deforestation, agriculture, fires, and mining.
