Online Grooming Puts Pakistani Children at Risk; UNICEF Finds 1.5 Million Abused Online | WION News
A UNICEF report estimates that around 1.5 million children in Pakistan experienced online sexual abuse in a single year, with about 85% of perpetrators reportedly known to their victims, aged 12 to 17. The abuse can begin through seemingly friendly conversations, gaming interactions or offers of gifts, money or romance.
The report found that 71% of victims did not tell anyone, largely due to stigma, shame and fears about family and societal reactions, while none of the children surveyed reported the abuse through formal channels. UNICEF also highlighted heightened risks for girls, including sexual extortion, as internet use expands among Pakistani children.
