Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of the most important characters in the history of House Targaryen, but the version we know from Fire & Blood was not always George R. R. Martin’s plan. In this video, we explore the surprisingly different versions of Rhaenyra that developed over more than two decades and what they reveal about George’s famous gardener writing style. Rhaenyra’s earliest appearance in A Game of Thrones presented a very different Dance of the Dragons, with Rhaenyra only one year older than Aegon II and many of the relationships, marriages and succession arguments central to the modern story seemingly not yet established. Over the years, Rhaenyra appears to have gone through several radically different histories, including a version where she married a Lannister and another where she married Lyonel Strong and had three legitimate children with him. It was only with The Princess and the Queen and The Rogue Prince that the familiar story involving Laenor Velaryon, Harwin Strong and Rhaenyra’s three eldest sons truly took shape. By tracing these alternate versions of Rhaenyra, we can see how George plants ideas, allows them to grow and sometimes completely transforms his original plans—and perhaps gain some insight into why writing The Winds of Winter has become such an enormous challenge.
