When climatologist Jack Hall warns that dramatic changes in the Earth's climate could trigger a catastrophic new ice age, his predictions are initially dismissed. But a series of increasingly violent weather disasters soon proves that something far more dangerous is happening to the planet.
As superstorms develop across the Northern Hemisphere, cities are devastated by tornadoes, massive floods, freezing temperatures, and unprecedented storms. The United States begins a desperate evacuation toward warmer regions as the world struggles to understand the rapidly changing climate.
Meanwhile, Jack's teenage son Sam is trapped in New York City with his friends Laura and Brian. After surviving a devastating flood, they take shelter inside the Manhattan Public Library, where they must find food, warmth, and a way to survive as temperatures continue to fall.
Jack refuses to leave his son behind. While authorities evacuate the population, he sets out on a dangerous journey north through a frozen and increasingly hostile landscape. With the weather becoming more extreme by the hour, Jack must reach Sam before the new ice age makes the journey impossible.
