After months of tensions over his demands for greater U.S. control of Greenland, Donald Trump announced a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that he says gives Washington “permanent control” over the island’s security and other needs. The announcement has brought relief to some people in Denmark after a period of uncertainty over U.S.-Danish relations. Copenhagen and Nuuk, however, have stressed that the agreement recognizes Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
