Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has sharply defended Canada’s decision to suspend trade negotiations with the United States, saying Washington “asked too much and offered too little.” Carney said Canada would not compromise on its sovereignty, key industries, language or culture, while accusing the U.S. of imposing new tariffs that would hurt Canadian workers, businesses and communities. The remarks come amid a deepening trade dispute between Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump, after negotiations broke down and new U.S. tariffs were imposed on Canadian goods. Carney said Canada remains ready to return to the table if the U.S. is prepared to negotiate a deal that respects Canadian interests.
