The United States has now publicly acknowledged that it has on-orbit space control weapons — but almost everything about them remains classified.
What are these systems actually designed to do? Why reveal their existence now? And could the announcement itself be part of the deterrence strategy?
In this Defense Foundry documentary, we look at what is known — and what is not — about America’s emerging counterspace capabilities. From satellite jamming and electronic warfare to maneuverable spacecraft, ground-based systems like Meadowlands and Remote Modular Terminals, and the separate development of Golden Dome’s space-based interceptors, the picture is becoming increasingly complex.
We also examine the wider strategic problem: as the United States, China and Russia build new ways to defend — and potentially deny — access to space, the line between deterrence and escalation becomes harder to define.
Modern military power depends on satellites for navigation, communications, missile warning, intelligence and targeting. In a future conflict, the first space war may not begin with an explosion.
It may begin when a spacecraft simply stops working.
Defense Foundry examines the industry, technology and strategic decisions behind modern military power.
