On April 16, 1945, the Red Army begins its final offensive on Berlin. With only 22 days left before Germany’s unconditional surrender, Soviet forces attack the Seelow Heights, where German troops have dug in to defend the road to the capital. The battle is brutal. Tens of thousands of Soviet soldiers die before the breakthrough succeeds, and Berlin soon comes under artillery fire. While Stalin pushes his armies toward the symbolic prize of the Reich capital, the Western Allies advance through Germany, liberating cities and concentration camps.
This documentary follows the downfall of Nazi Germany in the final days of the Second World War in Europe. British forces enter Bergen-Belsen, American troops film the horror of Buchenwald, and Dachau is liberated near Munich. The Allies discover emaciated prisoners, corpses, mass death and the full scale of Nazi crimes. In Berlin, Hitler’s inner circle collapses. Hermann Goering sends a telegram from Berchtesgaden, Heinrich Himmler secretly negotiates through Sweden, and Hitler sees betrayal everywhere. On April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide in the bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. Joseph Goebbels and his wife Magda murder their six children before killing themselves. Hitler’s chosen successor, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz, tries to save German troops from Soviet captivity, but the Allies demand surrender on all fronts. On May 8, 1945, the guns fall silent. The war in Europe is over.
