"Made in China" carries more weight right now than at any point in modern history. Tariffs, trade wars, entire political careers staked on what those three words mean.
I went to find out what they actually mean. Not to argue economics, not to take a political position, but as a craftsman, with one question: can China make great things?
I started at the bottom: the copy markets, where every major brand you've ever heard of gets replicated at every level of quality. Then the leather suppliers feeding that entire chain. Then a Xiaomi store that stopped me cold, a BYD that didn't feel like it was copying anyone, a DJI camera I'd been holding for years without ever asking where it came from, and a Chinese leather brand in a Shenzhen mall with a design language that wasn't looking over anyone's shoulder.
What I came back with wasn't the answer I expected.
Personal opinions in this video are mine, labelled as mine, not presented as verdicts.
Stay leathertained.

CHAPTERS/TIMESTAMPS
0:00 – "Made in China": three words, one question
Tariffs, trade wars, political careers staked on what those three words mean, and I went to answer it as a craftsman, not a pundit.
1:08 – Why this trip, why now
Decades of finding China somewhere in almost every bag I've ever cut open: hardware, lining, sometimes the whole construction.
2:17 – Baiyun Leather Trading Center
Every major brand replicated at every grade of quality, and craftsmanship good enough to stop and think twice.
3:50 – The leather suppliers behind the copies
Pebble, Togo, suede, veg-tan, European rawhide, tanned in China, sitting one plaza over from the copy shops.
4:46 – Good work, buried under mediocrity
Technical mastery that could hold its own against Europe, swallowed by a default setting of "what are we copying here."
5:39 – A Xiaomi store stops me
Cars that feel like Ferrari-Porsche territory, then a phone whose proportions and camera layout I couldn't unsee.
6:53 – The question I couldn't shake
When you're this capable, why do you still need to look like someone else?
7:01 – A BYD that felt different
An interior with its own logic and confidence, the first crack in the wall all trip.
7:54 – The DJI in my hand
Years of trusting a product I never once stopped to place, because the work was just good enough that it never felt relevant.
9:03 – Huawei, and a mall unlike anything else on the trip
Every major brand, every major Chinese tech company, and a statement about what China is becoming.
9:36 – Songmont
A design language that isn't looking over anyone's shoulder, the confirmation I needed in my own field.
11:05 – Apprenticeship, and the harder second stage
Every tradition starts by copying. The line only some ever cross is deciding what you want to say through the work.
13:05 – Not all of China has crossed that line
The copy markets are still full, but the crossings that are happening are happening in leather, cars, and cameras.
13:35 – What the tariffs actually mean now
Fear isn't always irrational. Sometimes it's just recognition that something has changed.
14:20 – The answer isn't fear
The one thing no factory, however skilled, can manufacture is your specific voice.
16:01 – Stay leathertained
