Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for “strategic autonomy” and closer ties between Canada and the European Union during an address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Carney welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal for Canada to become the EU's first “associate member”, saying there is strong public support in Canada for closer relations with Europe.
Canada's strained trade relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump is driving Ottawa to seek new international partnerships. The proposed associate membership could potentially include cooperation in research, education and energy, although the status has not yet been defined in EU law.
