Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has delivered a blunt message to Donald Trump from Strasbourg, backing plans for Canada to become the European Union’s first associate member. The announcement came after Trump mocked the proposal as “laughable” and warned Europe of potential tariffs if he considered the partnership hostile to the United States.
Before his European Parliament address, Carney laughed off chants of “USA! USA!” and highlighted strong Canadian support for closer ties with Europe. His remarks signal a potential shift in Canada’s economic and strategic partnerships as Ottawa seeks deeper cooperation with the EU beyond the existing CETA trade agreement.
