The Houthis have rejected Saudi Arabia’s claim that a drone was shot down while allegedly heading toward Mecca, calling the accusation a “worn-out lie.” Houthi official Hazem al-Assad denied that the group targeted Islam’s holiest city, while Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki warned that the security of Mecca, Medina and pilgrims remains a “red line.”
The dispute comes amid a sharp escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, with the Houthis claiming several attacks on Saudi military targets in recent days and Saudi-led forces continuing strikes on Yemen.
The latest confrontation also comes as the Houthis strengthen their position along Yemen’s Red Sea coast near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, adding another layer of tension to the wider Middle East and global shipping crisis.
