Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have seized key territory around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, including Perim Island, dramatically increasing their ability to threaten shipping through one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
The advance comes as Saudi Arabia already faces pressure on its oil exports after attacks on its East-West pipeline and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that Houthi control near the Red Sea chokepoint could place another major route for global oil supplies at risk.
