The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was conceived to execute strategic air warfare across oceanic distances, representing an unprecedented manufacturing and engineering effort. To produce thousands of airframes, brand-new manufacturing plants were erected, training over 58,000 personnel to assemble 55,000 individual parts and over one million rivets per aircraft. At the technological core were four Wright R-3350 engines fitted with twin General Electric turbochargers, operating inside a low-drag aerodynamic profile designed to avoid the high parasite drag issues that had plagued earlier heavy aircraft.
Combat debut in the China-Burma-India theater under Operation Matterhorn exposed severe logistical barriers. Every pound of ordnance and gallon of high-octane aviation fuel had to be transported across the Himalayas by the bombers themselves. Transferred to Saipan under the 21st Bomber Command, early missions such as San Antonio One revealed the severe operational hurdles posed by upper-altitude weather patterns and intense engine fires. When high-altitude daylight precision bombing failed to inflict decisive damage on Japanese aircraft factories, command passed to Major General Curtis LeMay.
LeMay’s pivot to nocturnal low-level incendiary bombing fundamentally reshaped the air campaign. Fleets of B-29s, flying between 5,000 and 9,000 feet without defensive ammunition, delivered M69 firebombs across urban industrial zones, destroying over 112 square miles across Japan's six principal industrial cities. The operational sequence reached its conclusion with the deployment of the atomic weapons by the 509th Composite Group's Enola Gay and Bockscar, followed by emergency humanitarian supply drops to Allied prisoners of war across the Pacific.
