How homeless people sleep in a tent without heating in blizzards starts with the thing almost everybody gets backwards before the tent goes up. 706 people were counted sleeping outside in Montana on a single night in January 2025. One of them pitched a twenty-dollar dome on snow, on purpose, and left the snow there. Fourteen nights, nine below at the worst, and he woke up dry every morning.
Why a tent at all, when a car has walls? Because a tent goes where a vehicle cannot — into a stand of trees, onto ground with no road to it, anywhere a patrol car will not follow. Settled snow carries real insulating value. Bare frozen ground carries almost none and behaves as a heat sink with no bottom — it takes everything a body produces, all night, and never fills up.

Packed snow sinters — the crystals bond into a firm flat slab that holds a body's weight without collapsing into a cold hollow. Pitching onto loose powder gets the worst of both.

Combustion inside a sealed tent is the highest-risk thing in this entire series. Carbon monoxide has no colour and no smell, and its early symptoms are the ones least likely to make anyone open a door.
The key lesson is that the tent is the least important item in the system, and the money almost always goes to the wrong place. Not one of these methods produces heat. Every one keeps heat a body was already making, and the two that matter most are decided before the tent is unrolled.
