In “All the President’s Wars,” Peter Bergen argues that every US president since the Al-Qaeda attacks of 2001 has “accrued more power” for the presidency.
Bush invaded Iraq, which had nothing to do with fighting Al-Qaeda. Obama became the “drone president,” launching attacks in countries not at war with the US. With the rise of the national security state, Obama could get approval for $120 billion for military spending, but not $2 billion for early childhood education.
Bergen tells host Steve Clemons that it’s still an open question whether 9/11 marked “the beginning of the end of American global dominance.”
