Maxwell once pictured electromagnetism very differently from the way we usually learn it today.
Instead of treating magnetism simply as something produced when charge moves, he imagined an organised rotational state within a medium, with electric current represented by particles moving through that system. To make the idea tangible, he built an extraordinary mechanical model of vortices and intermediary particles filling space.
That model helped him reason through induction, electromagnetic disturbances and ultimately the connection between electromagnetism and light. The literal mechanism was later abandoned, but the way Maxwell organised the relationship between magnetism and current remains surprisingly thought-provoking, especially when we compare it with the magnetic structure already present inside matter.
In this video, we explore Maxwell’s mechanical picture, what it allowed him to see, why it was so useful, and what looking at electromagnetism from that direction can still teach us today.
