This Nord Star 49+ was handed over to its new owner just days before we stepped aboard, giving us a rare opportunity to join him for part of the delivery voyage and discover why he chose it over some seriously capable alternatives.
Having previously owned two Targas, Peter knows Finnish all-weather pilothouse cruisers extremely well. When it came time to move up, he considered Targa, Sargo and Nord Star, ultimately choosing the 49+ for its space, interior layout and the ability to customise the boat around how he actually uses it.
And this is no ordinary 49+.
Peter specified triple Volvo Penta 480hp engines, giving it around 1,440hp and making it the most powerful Nord Star yet. During its first days on the water, it had already hit 42 knots.
In this YachtBuyer video, Jack Haines joins Peter for a 45-nautical-mile run from Southampton to Weymouth, UK, touring the boat with the man who specified it before putting those choices to the test on a proper coastal passage.
WHAT WE COVER
- Why a former Targa owner chose Nord Star
- Targa vs Sargo vs Nord Star
- Triple 480hp engine installation
- Semi-custom build & owner modifications
- Three-cabin accommodation
- Pilothouse & flybridge
- Joystick docking & owner operation
- Performance, handling & cruising efficiency
- Owner's first impressions
On passage, we spent much of the journey cruising at around 27–30 knots, with the Nord Star remaining quiet, comfortable and impressively composed. Push harder, and this particular boat has already recorded 42 knots, yet it retains the agile, responsive handling that makes this breed of Finnish cruiser so rewarding to drive.
More importantly, this is a chance to hear from somebody who has just spent his own money making the decision.
