Tonight, I’m travelling from Budapest to Split onboard one of Europe’s most legendary night trains, the Adria.
For almost 15 hours, this incredible train winds its way from the Hungarian capital, past Lake Balaton and overnight across Croatia, before climbing through the mountains and making its spectacular descent towards the Adriatic coast.
But this year, the journey is even more special. Our train is using former CIWL sleeping cars dating all the way back to the 1950s, complete with shiny stainless steel bodies and proper old school sleeper compartments. There’s even a wonderfully retro dining car onboard, where we’ll have dinner as the sun sets over Hungary and return for breakfast the following morning.
So join me for a proper old school European railway adventure as we explore this fascinating 70 year old sleeper, have dinner on the move, cross the Hungarian Croatian border in the middle of the night and wake up to some of the most spectacular railway scenery in Europe.
And despite the age of the train, almost everything goes exactly to plan. In fact, this ended up being one of my favourite night train journeys in a long time.
