The Japanese believed the Americans had abandoned Guadalcanal. Then their troops walked into a battlefield that had been prepared for them. What followed became one of the defining struggles of the early Pacific War.
This documentary examines the Japanese campaign to retake Henderson Field on Guadalcanal in 1942, focusing on Major General Kiyotake Kawaguchi and the series of failures that prevented Japan from defeating the American defenders.
After Japanese planners underestimated the strength and determination of the U.S. Marines, forces were sent into the island in separate formations and struggled against jungle terrain, broken communications, difficult logistics, and a defense that could concentrate firepower at the decisive moment. Kawaguchi’s brigade fought its way through the jungle, while American aircraft, artillery, machine guns, mortars, and reinforcements steadily turned the battlefield against the attackers.
The story reveals how intelligence failures, fragmented planning, terrain, and timing combined to undermine Japan’s attempt to recapture Henderson Field—and why Guadalcanal became such a costly campaign in the Pacific.
