How 9/11 permanently reshaped US security

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the changes they triggered still shape everyday life in the United States. The attacks led to the creation of the Transportation Security Administration, subjecting air travellers to tougher screening. Weeks later, Congress passed the Patriot Act, giving the government sweeping new surveillance powers, including access to phone, email, financial and other records.

The attacks also exposed failures in how agencies shared information, leading to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, which brought 22 federal agencies under one roof, and an overhaul of immigration enforcement that produced Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
