Calvin Carnes, Jr. has spent nearly two decades in prison serving four consecutive life sentences without parole for the 2005 Bourneside Street murders in Dorchester. On January 29, 2026, he filed a 112-page Second Motion for New Trial in Suffolk County Superior Court. Attorneys Bob and Ali Motta break down what's in it, and it is one of the most compelling wrongful conviction filings pending in Massachusetts.
The co-defendant, Robert Turner, confessed to at least five people. The DA's office had two of those confessions in its own records before trial. A handwriting expert says Turner forged a "confession letter" from Carnes and mailed it to the prosecution's star witness. The Commonwealth paid its two key witnesses a combined $45,943 and misrepresented it in its Certificate of Discovery Compliance. A detective listened to Carnes's calls with his attorney. The cell tower testimony that destroyed his alibi couldn't be supported by the data. The prosecutor's juror lists were color-coded after he told the court he hadn't looked at them. And the judge who denied relief wrote a recommendation letter for that prosecutor ten months later, citing the Carnes case as proof of his integrity.
