Cold War: Anatomy of an Adversary. Flight Testing the Captured MiG-15 Red Interceptor

In the autumn of 1953, the aerial balance of the Cold War underwent a seismic revelation when a North Korean pilot executed a daring flight across the 38th parallel, landing an intact Soviet-built Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 at Kimpo Air Base outside Seoul. Known by the intelligence cryptonym Project Moola, this event provided the United States Air Force with an unprecedented opportunity to evaluate the Soviet Union's frontline interceptor under rigorous flight conditions.

Transported under strict security to Kadena Air Force Base on Okinawa, the swept-wing fighter was methodically prepared for test trials led by three of the nation’s most experienced aviators: Major General Albert Boyd, Captain H.E. Tom Collins, and Major Chuck Yeager. Over the course of eleven high-risk flights, these pilots documented the exact flight envelope of an aircraft that had dominated the skies over MiG Alley. They measured its astonishing climb rate, its exceptional high-altitude agility, and the brutal lethality of its drop-down cannon tray containing two 23mm cannons and a heavy 37mm cannon. Simultaneously, they exposed its severe handling penalties, including violent roll tendencies and a terrifying loss of pitch control at Mach 0.94 that could only be arrested once the airframe descended into denser atmospheric levels.

Yet the technical paradox of the MiG-15 extended far beyond its airframe. The jet's propulsion system was rooted in a contentious political maneuver following the Second World War, when British Trade Minister Sir Stafford Cripps approved the sale of advanced Rolls-Royce Nene centrifugal-flow turbojets to the Soviet delegation. Soviet engineers under Vladimir Klimov reverse-engineered the British powerplant into the RD-45 and later the uprated VK-1, overcoming domestic metallurgical limitations to manufacture tens of thousands of engines. Paired with captured German aerodynamic data on swept wings, the British-derived engine elevated the Soviet aviation industry straight into modern combat parity with the West.

Presented in meticulously restored and authentic period color, this documentary examines the full chronology of the MiG-15: from London's post-war industrial sales and Moscow's reverse-engineering programs to the intense combat over North Korea and the definitive flight evaluations at Kadena that forever stripped the red interceptor of its operational mystique.
