Long before the swept-wing Messerschmitt Me 262 became known across Allied intelligence reports, Ernst Heinkel had already built and flown the world’s first purpose-designed twin-jet fighter: the Heinkel He 280. Fitted with twin centrifugal engines, a modern tricycle undercarriage, and an experimental compressed-air ejection seat, the He 280 demonstrated absolute aerodynamic superiority over contemporary piston-engine aircraft, out-turning a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in direct mock combat. Yet, this revolutionary design never entered front-line squadron service.
This comprehensive historical documentary traces the complete technological and strategic chronology of early jet aviation and the simultaneous collapse of the German Luftwaffe. Beginning with Hans von Ohain and Frank Whittle’s early turbine patents in the 1930s, the narrative examines how private initiative drove the maiden flight of the experimental Heinkel He 178 in August 1939, days before the invasion of Poland.
