The Day Kindness Won: A Small Town vs. 7,000 Strangers on 9/11

On September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying roughly 6,600 passengers and crew were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, a town of fewer than 10,000 people. This is the incredible true story of Gander on 9/11, Operation Yellow Ribbon, and how ordinary Newfoundlanders opened their homes to thousands of strangers.

From striking bus drivers returning to work, to locals lending out cars, finding medication, creating a kosher kitchen and even caring for animals stranded on the planes, the response became one of the most remarkable human stories connected to September 11.

I also look at Newfoundland’s strong Irish connection, Beulah Cooper and the O’Rourke family, and the true story that later inspired Come From Away.
