South Koreans are protesting against a potential military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, as the government weighs pressure from the United States against strong public opposition.
Polling shows 55% of South Koreans oppose sending military assistance, while 30% support the move amid concerns over energy security and the country’s export-driven economy.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for South Korea, supplying 70% of its crude oil and 50% of its naphtha.
The government has yet to make a final decision. Any military deployment would require approval from South Korea’s National Assembly, while Tehran has warned of “serious consequences” if Seoul sends forces.
