Uzbekistan has announced 30-day visa-free entry for Indian citizens, potentially making one of Central Asia’s most fascinating destinations much easier to visit. The announcement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Tashkent on August 29 and 30. But before booking your flight, there are a few important details to know. Uzbek authorities have announced the visa-free policy, but the start date and full entry conditions are yet to appear in current official visa guidance. Travellers should confirm the latest rules with the Uzbek embassy or their airline before departure.
Payments could also become easier for Indian visitors. NPCI International Payments Limited and Uzbekistan’s National Interbank Processing Centre have signed an agreement aimed at allowing Indian UPI-enabled apps to scan Uzbekistan’s national UZQR codes at local businesses. However, there is no confirmed launch date yet, and supported apps have not been announced. Until rollout begins, travellers should continue carrying an international card and local currency. India and Uzbekistan already have direct air connectivity, with 14 flights operating between the two countries each week.
So once you arrive, where should you go? Start in Uzbekistan’s capital. Visit the Khast Imam complex, explore the colourful Chorsu Bazaar, and ride Tashkent’s metro, where stations feature marble, mosaics and striking Soviet-era architecture. Take the Afrosiyob high-speed train to one of the great cities of the Silk Road. Begin at Registan Square, then visit the Shah-i-Zinda complex, Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Gur-e-Amir, the mausoleum of Amir Timur.
Continue to Bukhara, whose UNESCO-listed historic centre has more than 2,000 years of history. Explore the Poi Kalyan complex, Ark Citadel and Lyabi Hauz. Much of the historic centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Finish your journey in the walled city of Itchan Kala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with madrasas, mosques, minarets, palaces and historic trading buildings. For a first visit, allow around 6-8 days.

Tashkent: 2 nights
Samarkand: 2 nights
Bukhara: 2 nights
Khiva: up to 2 nights
Spring and autumn generally offer milder weather than the peak of summer. The visa-free announcement and planned UPI integration could remove two major concerns for Indian travellers, but both are still awaiting full implementation.
