NATO Boss’ AfD Shock: Merz ‘BETRAYED’; Rutte Vows To Work With Weidel | Won’t Fight German Voters’
Germany’s AfD is surging, raising fresh questions about the future of Berlin’s policies on Ukraine and NATO. After the AfD’s major victory in Saxony-Anhalt, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte dismissed concerns that the party’s rise could fracture the alliance. Rutte said NATO would work with “whoever is elected” and insisted the alliance would remain strong. The AfD opposes continued German military and financial support for Ukraine and wants sanctions on Russia lifted. Meanwhile, France’s National Rally is also leading early polls ahead of the 2027 presidential election, adding another potential challenge for NATO’s current approach to Ukraine and European defence.
