Germany’s Gas Storage Crisis: Will Europe Face Another Winter Energy Shock?

Germany is heading towards winter with its lowest gas storage levels for this time of year since records began 15 years ago. Storage facilities were just over half full at the beginning of September, raising concerns about supplies during the colder months.

Energy companies have been reluctant to replenish reserves because gas prices surged amid the Iran war, making it more profitable to sell gas than store it. Experts warn that an unusually cold winter, supply disruptions from Norway or rising demand could put further pressure on Germany’s energy system.

The government says storage levels could reach between 60 and 70 percent before winter, with pipeline imports and liquefied natural gas terminals helping meet demand. But households and industries could still face higher gas prices if supplies tighten.
