Gut Fungus May Protect Against Radiation Damage, Scientists Find | WION Podcast

Scientists have discovered a surprising potential defence against radiation damage hiding within the gut: the fungus Mucor racemosus. In experiments on mice, the fungus reduced signs of intestinal injury and produced amino acids that helped support DNA-damage repair. It also altered interactions with beneficial gut bacteria, increasing production of compounds linked to greater radiation tolerance. Even cheese fermented with the fungus showed protective effects in irradiated mice, highlighting a possible future dietary or therapeutic approach. Human benefits have not yet been established, and further safety research is required before such an approach could be recommended.
