Big Bash League Privatization | Melbourne Renegades First To Enter Private Ownership Process

Cricket Australia has approved a major privatization plan for the Big Bash League (BBL), opening the door for private investment into BBL and WBBL teams.

The Melbourne Renegades will become the first club to enter a formal sales process, with bids expected as Cricket Australia and its state members look to secure the long-term future of the leagues. States will have the option to sell a stake in their clubs or potentially transfer full ownership to private investors.

The upcoming BBL season, beginning in December 2026, will not be affected by the process. Cricket Australia will run the Renegades in a caretaker capacity, with the club expected to enter the 2027-28 season under new ownership.

The move could pave the way for other Big Bash League clubs to explore private ownership, although individual states will ultimately decide whether to sell stakes in their respective teams.
