A new CAG audit in Tamil Nadu has flagged serious irregularities in the state transport department, including government vehicle registration numbers, fancy number allotments, driving tests and vehicle fitness certificates.
According to the report tabled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, more than 14,000 government vehicles were transferred to private owners without changing their government 'G' series registration numbers. The CAG warned that this could create security concerns and potentially allow private vehicles to evade tolls and police checks.
The audit also flagged irregularities in the allotment of fancy registration numbers, estimating a potential revenue loss of around ₹133 crore. More than 32,000 vehicles reportedly received reserved numbers at rates below the prescribed base fee of ₹40,000.
The report also raised concerns over possible bulk buying of premium numbers. In one instance, a single mobile number was reportedly used nearly 2,000 times to acquire reserved registration numbers.
Driving tests came under scrutiny as well. In 49 RTOs, individual motor vehicle inspectors were recorded clearing 100 or more tests in a single day. Some tests reportedly lasted around 30 seconds for motorcycles and two minutes for light motor vehicles, below the prescribed duration.
The CAG also found a major infrastructure gap, with more than 55% of RTOs lacking dedicated driving test tracks. Over 77,900 vehicles, including 27 ambulances, were reportedly operating without valid fitness certificates.
