Kolkata’s rising water problem isn’t a distant climate warning. It is happening now.
A new UN report warns that more than 14 million people across Kolkata, Mumbai and Dhaka are at immediate risk from permanent flooding, where land could go underwater and stay there.
Globally, around 770 million people — one in 10 — live less than five metres above the high-tide line, while infrastructure worth nearly $1.8 trillion is already exposed.
Kolkata is especially vulnerable. The city sits on the low-lying Ganges-Brahmaputra delta, is criss-crossed by canals and has been built extensively over reclaimed wetlands. Decades of groundwater extraction have also contributed to land subsidence, making the city even more exposed as sea levels rise.
So what happens when the water doesn't recede?
Environmentalist SM Ghosh explain the scale of the threat, who will bear the greatest cost, and what can still be done — from restoring wetlands and mangroves to strengthening coastal defences and cutting emissions.
For communities along the Hooghly and in the Sundarbans, this isn't simply a climate projection. It is about homes, livelihoods and displacement.
