Twenty-five years after the 9/11 attacks reshaped global counterterrorism efforts, Europe is confronting a new and evolving security challenge. While jihadist organisations continue to pose a significant threat, European authorities say a rapidly growing online extremist network known as "The COM" is becoming an increasing concern. European Union Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Bartjan Wegter described the phenomenon as "violence for the sake of violence," warning that many of those involved are young people radicalised through online platforms. Europol data shows that 45 terrorist attacks were reported across 10 EU member states last year, with nearly half being foiled or failing. Authorities arrested 486 terror suspects in 21 countries, with jihadist groups accounting for the majority of attacks and more than 70% of the arrests.
