In October 1943, the Allied command in the Southwest Pacific executed one of the most meticulously coordinated air offensives in military history: the systematic neutralization of Fortress Rabaul. Situated on the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain, Rabaul served as the Imperial Japanese military’s primary naval and aerial bastion south of Truk Lagoon. Choked with supply transports, fortified by heavy anti-aircraft emplacements, and ringed by operational airfields at Vunakanau, Rapopo, and Tobera, the stronghold was deemed impregnable to conventional assault.
Rather than risking an amphibious invasion against a dug-in garrison of 100,000 troops, Lieutenant General George C. Kenney’s Fifth Air Force enacted a strategy designed to bypass the garrison, severing its logistical lifelines and turning the sky into a ceiling of fire. The campaign required months of preliminary operations: scratching clandestine fighter strips from the coral of Woodlark and Kiriwina Islands, eliminating enemy airfields at Wewak, executing the mass paratroop drop at Nadzab, and systematically sweeping coastal barge traffic along the Huon Peninsula.
When the strike was unleashed on October 12, 1943, the tactic was radical. Abandoning standard high-altitude precision doctrine, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers swept in at treetop altitude, skimming the jungle canopy at 100 feet to fly underneath Japanese early-warning radar arrays. Armed with forward-firing machine-gun batteries and parachute-retarded fragmentation bombs, the Mitchells smothered the revetments of Vunakanau and Rapopo, destroying over 100 aircraft before their gear could retract. High overhead, twin-boom P-38 Lightnings provided escort cover against intercepting Zeros, while B-24 Liberators pounded harbor installations.
